Spindly legged genius, rejected twice by Palace for being too small.

Couldn't call him small now, though

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
Along with Sir Trev and Bonzo one of the three all time greats post Moore era. Terrible shame that a bad injury cut his career short and if he'd have been around in today's game would easily be a £40-50m player , better than any current England player in his position by some distance. Smoked like a chimney and spent half his life in the bookies as many did back then but top player.

Great player to watch, so comfortable on the ball. Made it look easy.

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
Yep, he was quality, even when they was trying to kick lumps out of him. He let his football do the talking. Used to glide across the pitch.
And he used to pop in our bookies in Stepney green to do the dogs on his way to the ground on a saturday. Think he owned some greyhounds then, or a bit later. We used to tell him to listen out for us over there. As if..!

I’ve always had a pathological dislike for Wigan ever since their left back took out Devo in the FA Cup in 1983 and put him out ot the game for almost two years.

Very nice, goals out of nothing

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
Remember those pitches were like ploughed fields for most of the year. Imagine seeing Devo on today’s carpet-like surfaces. He would be absolutely unstoppable.

Class.

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
Re the heavy pitches - only used boots with moulded studs as well which is amazing considering the control and balance he had. Went past players easier than any other West Ham player I've seen.

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
As well as the better pitches he would also be more dangerous in a world where 1970’s style tackling isn’t allowed.

One of my favourite ever players

Worth gazillions in today's market

Re: Alan Devonshire you tube
It's ridiculous how few England caps he got. But when Bobby Robson did pick him, it was as an out and out left winger waiting for the ball to come to him. Not his game at all, of course, he liked to roam, pick the ball up deep, and make those mazy runs.
